Jean-François Formela, M.D.
Senior Partner, Atlas Venture
Dr. Formela is a Senior Partner in the life sciences sector, and joined Atlas Venture in 1993. Previously, he was Senior Director, Medical Marketing, and Scientific Affairs at Schering-Plough in the U.S. During his tenure there, Dr. Formela was responsible for the marketing of Intron A, Schering-Plough’s alpha-interferon. In his last position at Schering-Plough, he directed the U.S. Phase IV studies in all therapeutic areas, as well as the health economics, medical information, and biotechnology pre-marketing groups. As a medical doctor, Dr. Formela practiced emergency medicine at Necker University hospital in Paris.
Since joining Atlas Venture, Dr. Formela has been involved in the formation of companies such as ArQule (Nasdaq: ARQL), MorphoSys (Neuer Markt: MORG), Exelixis (Nasdaq: EXEL), deCODE genetics (Nasdaq: DCGN), Nuvelo (Nasdaq: NUVO), Structural GenomiX, CellZome, Archemix and Aureon Biosciences.
Dr. Formela received his M.D. from Paris University School of Medicine, and his MBA from Columbia University.
